Why am I Here?

Here's a second video from The Seen's 2001 reunion at the State College Arts Fest...a little slower song, with some slower transitions to the video...I've always really liked this song, and it was fun to make a video montage of it.

Younger than Yesterday

The Seen's 20th anniversary Arts Festival reunion, from 2001.

This video is very meaningful to me on a lot of different levels. The drummer for The Seen, Doug Edmunds, was a good buddy of mine back in High School, here in State College, and I have a lot of great memories of the times we had together. One of my all time favorite images I've ever taken was of Doug jumping down a flight of five or six steps, over at the North Building, and I caught him in mid air, pefect lighting, and he's got this totally silly pose that was so Doug and his personality...and I must confess to all of you that some of the craziness of my personality was a direct result of Doug and his bad influences on me. Doug would later be in a band called "The Gladhands", and they made three records during the 90's....well, four if you count a reissue of some of their early work. Doug's new band was very close to "making it" before their record label closed shop, and the band went their separate ways shortly after that.

Glenn, the guitar player, worked at Arboria Records, where I would hang out for countless hours with my buddies...and talking to Glenn was always an amazing time, because that man lived and breathed (and still does) 60's rock and roll, and he never had a problem with us young teenagers coming into the store, looking over all the old and new records. Living in a college town, there was a lot of music at our fingertips...and it was Glenn who first really taught me that there was more music out there than what you hear on the radio. The first time I heard REM was at Arboria Records, thanks to Glenn, and I've been a fan ever since.

Perhaps the biggest reason this video has so much meaning for me, is that at the end, there's an image of the guys from that early Arts Fest concert, back in the early 80's. You can't miss the picture. What's so special about that image is that it's from my very first professional shoot. I had just purchased a brand new lens for my Dad's (later mine... :) camera, and Doug thought it'd be cool (after some nudging from me) to have me photograph the show for them for some publicity pictures. I had absolutely NO clue what I was doing, but the images turned out really well, the guys were impressed, so when the time came for the 20th anniversary reunion, I was there.

It's been a long road since High School, but after all these years, I still keep in contact with Doug, and I still have the music and the memories we made from over 25yrs ago. Enjoy!
